(Recipe) Hanami Oinari

Oinari is a Japanese dish consisting of sushi rice stuffed inside fried tofu pouches that have been cooked in a dashi broth-forward mixture. These are pink cherry blossom colored oinari that are perfect for hanami, although it is hard to tell the true color from the photos. They are easy to make with the ingredients found at Maido and they make a great easy lunch for hanami and other occasions.

Ingredients:

3 tbsp of red pickled ginger

Red pickled ginger juice + water for 1.4 cups of rice

1.5 cups of rice

A pinch of roasted white sesame seeds

10-15 pieces of oinari skin

Directions:

1. Rinse 1.5 cups of white rice as usual and soak in water. Just before cooking, discard the water and instead add 1. 4 cups of pickled red ginger juice + water.

2. Cook rice in the white rice mode. The rice will turn slightly pink.

3. Once the rice is cooked, add chopped red ginger and mix well.

4. Fill the inari skin with what you made in step 3. Use the leftover red ginger as a topping to make it look better. Enjoy!

Tip:

Since the red pickled ginger is already pickled, you do not need any sushi vinegar.
