Matcha Recipes

If you love green tea, you already know that matcha is incredibly versatile. It can ground a morning meditation ritual, power a creamy iced latte, or add a vibrant earthiness to your favorite baked goods.

Because our store carries an extensive collection of distinct matcha powders from top-tier brands (see our previous blog post), we know that using the right grade changes everything.

To help you get the absolute most out of your kitchen creations, we have put together four delicious recipes. Each recipe features a specific matcha from our shelves to ensure your flavors turn out perfectly balanced every single time.

Traditional Whisked Matcha

The Perfect Match: Sugimoto Organic Ceremonial Matcha Yui, Maeda-En Ceremonial Matcha, Yamashiro Uji Matcha - High-grade ceremonial matcha is delicate and naturally sweet. Whisking it purely with hot water allows its smooth texture and zero-bitterness profile to shine without being masked by milk or sugar.

Ingredients

- 1 tsp of matcha

- 2 oz of hot water (around 175°F / 80°C - never boil it!)

- 2 oz of additional hot water to fill the bowl

Directions

  1. Sift your matcha through a fine mesh strainer straight into your tea bowl to remove any tiny lumps.

  2. Pour in the initial 2 oz of hot water.

  3. Whisk vigorously using a chasen, traditional bamboo whisk in a "W" or "M" motion. Keep your wrist loose and whisk until a thick, velvety layer of froth forms on top.

  4. Add the remaining hot water, give it a gentle swirl, and enjoy immediately with a moment of quiet focus.

Matcha Oat Milk Latte

The Perfect Match: Maeda-En Universal Matcha, Sugimoto Organic Daily Matcha - Ceremonial grades can easily get drowned out by milk, but the universal and daily grades strike the ultimate balance. It features a pleasant, slight astringency that easily cuts through creamy oat milk while retaining its beautiful green hue.

Ingredients

- 1.5 tsp of matcha

- 2 oz of warm water

- 6 oz of oat milk (or your choice of dairy/plant milk)

Ice (if making it iced)

<Optional>

- 1 tsp of honey, agave, or simple syrup

Directions

  1. Whisk or shake the matcha powder and warm water together until smooth and completely dissolved. Stir in your sweetener if desired.

  2. Fill a glass with ice and pour your cold oat milk over it (or steam your milk if you prefer a warm latte).

  3. Slowly pour the concentrated matcha mixture over the top of the milk. Watch the vibrant green and white layers swirl together before stirring and sipping!

Matcha Brownies

The Perfect Match: Maeda-En Culinary Matcha - Baking requires a hard-working ingredient. Maeda-En's Culinary grade is purposely robust, intensely earthy, and distinctly bitter. When mixed with heavy fats, flour, and sugar, it won't disappear; it locks in a rich green color and an authentic tea punch.

Ingredients

- 2 tbsp of matcha

- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted

- 1 cup of white granulated sugar

- 2 large eggs

- 1 tsp of vanilla extract

- 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour

- 1/2 tsp of baking powder

<Optional>

- 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F/175°C and line an 8 x 8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.

  2. In a bowl, whisk the melted butter and sugar together, then beat in the eggs and vanilla until the mixture turns pale and smooth.

  3. Sift the flour, baking powder, and matcha directly into the wet ingredients. Gently fold everything together with a spatula until just combined. Fold in white chocolate chips if using.

  4. Spread the thick, green batter evenly into your pan. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. Let cool completely before slicing.
