Eto Kagamimochi

New Year’s is quickly approaching, and that means Eto Kagamimochi are back at Maido! The perfect size for just one person, this year’s Eto Kagamimochi features a choice between a cute cow-shaped topper for the Year of the Ox, or a maneki neko figure to bring in that good luck. For those who are unfamiliar, kagamimochi is a special type of mochi rice cake eaten on New Year’s Day. Made of a smaller mochi cake stacked on top of a larger one, kagamimochi are generally decorated and set atop a stand or altar in the weeks leading up to the new year. A mikan orange is the most traditional type of topper, but in modern times, a number of different figures, usually referencing the zodiac or good fortune, can be found gracing the tops of kagami mochi displays. Get ready for the new year and pick up your very own Eto Kagamimochi on your next trip to Maido for groceries and other essentials!
