What is Setsubun?

Setsubun (節分) is a Japanese traditional festival celebrated the day before the beginning of spring in Japan (on February 3). Setsubun is usually celebrated by throwing soybeans outside the house to chase out the evil of the former year. This special ritual called Mamemaki (豆まき). Usually an adult in family plays this roll in an Oni costume. When beans are thrown, the children shout “Evil out! Happiness in!”.

Another traditional custom is to eat Ehoumaki (恵方巻, big sushi rolls) so that good fortune will be rolled in. It needs to be eaten in silence while facing the year’s lucky compass direction (this year is East Northeast). Eating a whole ehoumaki symbolizes that good human relations will not be cut off.
