Somen noodles are easy to eat even when it’s hot and you've lost your appetite. There is a secret technique to make them even tastier. The trick is to add a certain ingredient to Somen noodles. Can you guess what it is? The answer is the pickled plum.
When you boil somen noodles with a pickled plum, the citric acid in the pickled plum prevents the starch in the somen from dissolving into the boiling water, making the noodles more firm. Now, let's give it a try!
Boil a pot of water, and put the whole pickled plum in the water. Add the somen noodles to the pot, and boil it according to the directions on the package. You can use 1 pickled plum per 1 liter of water. After boiling, take it out in a colander and cool it under running water, and it's ready to serve!
When you try it, you'll be surprised at how different it is from the usual somen noodles! The noodles get firmer and more satisfying than regular boiled somen noodles. You must be wondering if the flavor of the pickled plums would be transferred to the somen when boiling them together. However, the flavor and sourness actually don't transfer to the somen noodles. It's a great way to consume the extra pickled plum in your refrigerator. It's a very easy method, so if you haven't tried it yet, take this opportunity to do so.
