Plant Season is Back - Radish

We've been talking about vegetables and herbs this week. Today, we'll talk about radishes.

Radish Seeds - Tokinashi All Season

50-60 days to maturity. Cool season annual. Tokinashi is a dento yasai, or traditonal vegetable of Japan. It's a popular, all-season daikon radish with strong pungency and a nice flavor. Mature roots have firm, white, crisp flesh and are of excellent quality. This is a slow-bolting, open pollinated variety. Use in soup, salad, pickled or fresh. Daikon oroshi (coarsely grated daikon using a Japanese grater) is delicious in broths and sauces used for soba noodles, tempura and sashimi.

Seed Information:

Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring after last frost or in late summer/early fall in a warm, sunny location. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Harvest when roots are 10-16" long and 2" in diameter.

Radish Seeds - Chinese - Shunkyo 30-40 days to maturity. Cool season annual. Originally from Northern China, this fast-growing early radish variety is easy to grow and has red-pink skin and white flesh. The roots have a hot, sweet flavor and the tops are tender and delicious. The leaves are tasty stir-fried or pickled. Roots are excellent fresh in salads or pickled. Seed Information: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring after last frost or in late summer/early fall in a warm, sunny location. Avoid sowing in the hottest part of summer. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Harvest when roots are 4-8" long. Alt Names: alibanos, Chinese radish, cu cai, daikon, labanos, lao bo, lobak, lo bok, lo pak, luo bu, moo, mu, muli, oriental radish, phakkaat hua, rabanos, rabu. Pickled Radish in Sweet Vinegar

With its beautiful color and crisp texture, pickled radish makes a perfect side dish for rice when it’s pickled in sweet vinegar. It’s easy to make without using stove, so try it when you want one more dish but don't want to anything complicated.

Ingredients:

(2 servings)

200 g/7 oz. of radish

4 tbsp of vinegar

2.5 tbsp of sugar

0.5 tsp of salt

Directions:

  1. Cut red radish crosswise lengthwise, then cut into thin slices.

  2. Place vinegar, sugar, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a light simmer, stirring constantly, then turn off the heat.

  3. Put radish and sweet vinegar (step 2) in a heatproof container, remove from heat, and let sit in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Then, it's ready to serve.

Radish Seeds - Chinese - Starburst - Hybrid

60 days to maturity. Cool season annual. Open pollinated. Starburst is a watermelon-type radish characterized by a bright red interior and a white/green exterior. Expect maturity in about 60 days, depending on day length and temperatures. It's good for salad, pickles, and more dishes. In Northern China, this radish is carved into attractive flower shapes for garnish.

Seed Information:

Performance will be best in most areas if seeds are planted in early spring or fall. Mature roots are tangerine sized with upright bright green foliage. Use to dress up salads or slaws or pickle them to preserve. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in early spring and late summer/fall in a sunny location. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed.
