Matsutake Mushroom


New at Maido, and only for a limited time are Matsutake Mushrooms! Matsutake are one of Japan’s most highly prized and sought-after mushrooms. Possessing a distinct and complex odor, matsutake makes an excellent component in delicate soups, and are outstanding when eaten roasted as a side dish or appetizer in a multi-course meal. Like black truffles, or fiddlehead ferns, matsutake require very specific growing conditions which renders them impossible to grow commercially. Instead, matsutake mushrooms must be gathered from wild sources, and as such are only available for a short period of time each year. Experience the flavor and aroma of Japan’s most valuable mushroom, and be sure to grab one from our produce section on your next visit to Maido while supplies last! Once matsutake are gone for the season, the only thing we can do is wait for them to come out again next year!
